Restless Leg Syndrome vs. Leg Cramps: How to Tell the Difference

Woman having difficulty sleeping due to restless legs in Walnut Creek, CA

Have you ever settled into bed only to have uncomfortable sensations in your legs keep you awake? Maybe you feel an overwhelming need to move, or perhaps a sudden, painful tightening jolts you out of sleep. While restless leg syndrome and leg cramps can both disrupt your night, they are different problems with distinct symptoms.

At Elite Vein and Aesthetics, the Varicose Vein Center of Excellence, Dr. O’Hare and her experienced staff provide individualized, minimally invasive vein care for patients experiencing uncomfortable leg symptoms. The practice combines advanced vein treatment technology with attentive, supportive care to help patients improve their vascular health and get their legs feeling their best.

What Does Restless Leg Syndrome Feel Like?

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is characterized by a strong, or sometimes irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations. Symptoms typically become more noticeable when sitting or lying down, and are often worse in the evening or at night. Walking, stretching, or otherwise moving the legs may temporarily ease the discomfort.

People describe RLS sensations in different ways, including crawling, tingling, pulling, aching, or an inability to keep the legs still. Because symptoms often occur at bedtime, RLS can make falling asleep challenging.

How Are Leg Cramps Different?

Leg cramps involve sudden, involuntary muscle contractions. They often affect the calf and can cause intense pain as the muscle tightens and temporarily refuses to relax. Unlike RLS, which creates an urge to move, a leg cramp usually feels like a distinct muscle spasm or knot.

Cramps may occur after exercise or muscle overuse and can also be associated with dehydration or certain electrolyte imbalances. Although nighttime leg cramps and RLS can both interrupt sleep, paying attention to whether you experience muscle tightening versus persistent restlessness can help distinguish them.

When Leg Symptoms May Be Related to Your Veins

Not every uncomfortable leg sensation is caused by RLS or a simple muscle cramp. Symptoms such as aching, heaviness, swelling, or other persistent changes may warrant an evaluation to determine whether an underlying vascular problem could be contributing.
